European vacaation day 18: Going home. Greatly helped by the airlines Nancy selected, we were able to avoid the scramble to find alternative flights. None the less, the alarm went off at 0400 hrs to get to the airport before it opened. We flew to Zurich (1) and then to Toronto (2) where we had to make a connecting flight in 1 hour that included going through a new system of clearing customs that the Canadian government employees didnt understand either. We just made it on. Air Canada deserves the thanks for changing that flight on us as Nancy carefully had left us 2 hours to make the connection. We crossed Lake Michigan (3) and arrived in Denver to see Gracie (4), get something to eat, and go to bed. What I experienced from this is 1. I dont enjoy flying and never have, so in order for a foreign vacation to be worth it, it has to be at least 2 weeks but by week 3 Im ready to go home. 2. Cycling is the best way to see a country but it has to be sunny, warm, and dry. Good food and wine is a must. Therefore the target places are Southern France, Northern Spain and Northern italy. I much prefer being at a fixed base and doing day trips out from there. There are places I would go that require moving from day to day such as Croatia, Sicily and Mallorca but if so would use a much more service oriented bike company such as VBT. Its more expensive, but they know the best places. Ill probably never go back to the Czech Republic, and perhaps not to Austria or Germany. Someday I want to see England, Ireland, Scandinavia, and maybe Australia and New Zealand, but those may not be bike trips. I dont like teeming masses of poverty stricken humanity or governments that dont care about their own or anyone elses citizens and I like my creature comforts. Im just not that adventurous for third world experiences. Ive thought about an eastern Mediterranean cruise, but right now that doesnt seem safe. This means no Greece, Turkey, Israel or Jordan. The window of opportunity for those may have closed. As for the family past discovery aspect of the trip Ill post on that later when Ive got more time to digest it all. Tomorrow, off to Snowmass. Its supposed to snow.
