Every Friday MANIFESTA digs through the archives in celebration of its 20th anniversary. This week we go back to MANIFESTA 5 in 2004 which was held in Donostia-San Sebastian in the Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. In the spotlight today is Jan De Cock’s ambitious project Denkmal #2 (Monument #2) from 2004. For this project he staged an intervention in an old shipbuilding warehouse in Passaia, a space that formed a central discussion in local politics. Over a period of two months, De Cock created an intricate series of interlocking panels which ignored the basic architectural construction of the building, leaving instead an aesthetic system responding directly to context and the future possibilities of the site. Work by De Cock can be viewed at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam as part of a generous donation by the art-collecting couple Sanders.
