Every birth is a miracle and a wonder, but the birth of Jesus changed the world and the history of humankind. Luke’s story of the Annunciation presents us with an ordinary young woman living in a small town, Nazareth. What is extraordinary about this event is Mary’s openness to God’s plan. Her assent is not a shoulder-shrugging ‘whatever’. Mary asks the pertinent question and receives an answer that will light up the world: ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.’ Her assent is given in humble and unassuming words, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord.’ And Immanuel - God with us - is here with us today.
