Everyone, The last of our wild live population of bilbies in Queensland are in real trouble. Further down on my facebook page there are photos, I warn you the photos are gruesome but they are real. You will also see I am trying to get all federal political parties to commit before the election to hold a National Feral Animal and Invasive Species Summit, and I am asking all Australians to please sign a petition: causes/actions/1757254-demand-a-national-summit-on-feral-animals-and-invasive-species?recruiter_id=127726151&utm_campaign=own_timeline&utm_medium=wall&utm_source=fb I am delighted to tell you that the Queensland Premier listened to my story and instructed his ministers to hold the first feral animal summit in July 2013,. It was a huge success please see the draft minutes below. I strongly believe with your help we can win this battle! The Qld Feral Animal Summit had more than 70 participants attend, representing all sectors including community, industry and government. Participants discussed the impacts feral animals have on the industry and environment, and actions required to prevent further impacts. The Summit was the first stage of building and enhancing the management of feral animals in Queensland. Information from the Summit will guide the development of a framework to address particular feral animal issues, promote and inform on those issues and identify funds and resources to mitigate those issues. Commonly agreed directions arising from the Summit: * Importance of preventing new, emerging species and an expansion of existing species ranges. * Establishing commonly agreed and clearly expressed priorities, roles, responsibilities and actions * Support for systems that reward effective management and allow compliance actions to encourage participation * Multi species management approaches rather than species specific approaches. * Increasing community understanding and engagement. * Importance of collaboration and coordination. * The need for the community to be aware and skilled to deal with feral species * A commitment to streamline access to existing funding and ensure funding is coordinated, practical and inclusive. * Eliminating duplication through knowledge networks and communication groups to gather and disseminate information to stop duplication of effort. * Innovating to expand the number of people and organisations involved in the management of feral animals. Invasive Plants and Animals Committee: The Invasive Plants and Animals Committee (IPAC) was also announced at the Summit which will comprise of representatives from a number of industry bodies, and state and local government governments. IPAC representatives will play an overarching and leadership role in managing invasive plant and animal issues across the state. The Summit Steering Committee The Summit Steering Committee includes representatives from: * Save the Bilby Fund, * AgForce * Local Government Association of Queensland * Queensland Farmers Federation * Queensland Conservation Council The Steering Committee will make recommendations for consideration by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
