Excavations in Lumbini have discovered the earliest S Asian Budhist shrines, pushing the date back pre Ashoka (i.e. pre 3rd century BC). Nearby remains of a village date at 1300BC; but the early shrine shows that there was a budhist temple here BEFORE King Ashoka spread Buddhism across S. Asia. unesco.org/new/en/kathmandu/about-this-office/single-view/news/earliest_buddhist_shrines_in_south_asia_discovered_in_lumbini_buddhas_birthplace_in_nepal/
