Romans 6 To Live We Must Die to Sin THE BIG PICTURE Paul uses Abraham as an example for Gentiles as well as Jews.He was accepted by God through faith long before the law of Moses was given by God.Abraham is the father of all- Jew and Gentile alike.God did not wait until we were good enough.Jesus came and died for us while we were sinners.People have sinned since Adam.Adam brought death but Jesus has brought us life.Should we continue to sin or should we refuse to be controlled by sin which has been defeated through the death of Jesus.Choose to do good and live rather than drift back into sin and death. THINKING STEP In response to Paul the Rabbis insisted that Abraham kept the law hundred of years before Moses brought it! They could never concede that faith was enough so they insisted that Abraham kept the law by anticipation.Keeping it without knowing that he was doing so ! There are truly none so blind as those who will not see! ACTION STEP 5:3-4-’We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials,for we know that they are good for us - they help us learn to endure and endurance develops strength of character in us ....’ When we imply that coming to Christ will help us avoid all future problems we are teaching a travesty of the real truth.Paul knew what it meant to encounter problems and these two verses really sum up the reality available to all Christians when life doesn’t go as smoothly as they hope.Rejoicing when we come into difficult times is easier said than done! It can only be done when we fully trust the Lord.If you are not having troubles at the moment then you cannot imagine how the Holy Spirit will undertake when you need Him and His comfort.The reality only comes when there is a need.We are not given a ‘free sample fix’ ahead of time.God doesn’t deal with us like that.Learning to endure is something that we have to experience to know how good God can be.It’s seeing over the situation and trusting God now,knowing that He sees the end and the beginning,and will guide us through it.If you are ‘going through the mill’ these verses are for you now.Be encouraged and you will become a stronger character for God.Then you are equipped to encourage others.
