Several dozen young men responded to his advert but he eventually narrowed his choice down to three: Bayo, Ifeanyi and Bassey. Then he devised a final test. He gave each of them a new screwdriver set with an innovative design and told them to deliver it to Alhaji Abubakar Musa at 215 Oshodi Street. After a while, Bayo phoned the store to ask whether the number was actually 512, rather than 215. Later he returned saying there was no house at that address. When Ifeanyi came back, he reported that 215 Oshodi was a supermarket and that Alhaji Musa had lived at 215 but had moved away. Bassey took longer than the other two young men did. Like Ifeanyi, he also discovered that Alhaji Musa moved away, but had managed to secure his new address and had gone there. Alhaji Musa didn’t recall ordering the screwdriver, but when Bassey pointed out its unique features and told him its price, Alhaji Musa decided he wanted the screwdriver and paid for it on the spot. I remember reading the story of a professor who was diagnosed of a disease that causes gradual paralysis throughout the body with no cure at sight. When it became difficult to examine patients, he became a consultant. Later he started working from home. When he could no longer turn the pages of a book or lost his voice he got a computer to do it for him. He never gave up. At each point in time he came up with a solution to his problem. So when next you fail to accomplish a task, you know who to blame. When there is a will, there will be a way.
