Exploring the Hidden Tunnels of Historic Greendale An enduring legend of original Greendale has been the existence of a labyrinth of tunnels hidden below the Broad Street stores on the west side of Broad Street. It’s not a legend — the tunnels are there. These original tunnels carried hot water heat to the Village stores in 1938. In October, with the fearless guidance of Anne Marie Pierce, Greendale Historical Society President Ted Mainella crawled along several hundred feet of long-abandoned underground Greendale. The pair brushed aside years of spider webs, ignored a few creepy crawlers and made their way from beneath Ricardo’s Pizza, south near the National Bakery to the library where the barely walkable tunnel ended. The steam pipes then go west to their original source — the former heating plant in the west side of the original Fire and Police Station. The tunnels are secured and locked at all times.
