FACTS ABOUT JNANPITH AWARDS 1. Itis a literary award in India given along with the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship. 2. Bharatiya Jnanpith, a trust founded by the Sahu Jain family, the publishers of the newspaper The Times of India. 3. It is one of the two most prestigious literary honours in the country. 4. The award was instituted in 1961. 5. It carries a cheque for ₹11 lakh, a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Saraswati, the Indian goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts. 6. As of 2012 most Jananpith award winners, nine to be precise, have been writing in Hindi followed by eight in Kannada, five each in Bengali and Malayalam, four each in Oriya and Urdu and three each in Gujarati, Marathi and Telugu and two each in Assamese and Tamil. 7. The first Jnanpith award was given to G. Sankara Kurup- for Odakkuzhal (Flute) in Malyalam 8. First woman to get the Jnanpith award was the Bengali writer Ashapoorna Devi in 1976 for her work-Pratham Pratisruti 9. 2012, Jnanpith award has been given to Ravuri Bharadhwaja for his notable contribution to Telugu literature
