FDA tries to make mid-day meal safer: In the backdrop of several food poisoning cases in the country, FDA had organised the meeting and training session for the SHGs on Sunday. Participants said they were glad to get good information about safe food handling and preparation and promised to implement these habits. The training was organised in collaboration with the Indian Hospitality Ventures and Bindra’s Hospitality Services. The programme was launched under the Mission Safe Food byFDA (food) Pune, where training will also be provided to hawkers as well as five-star hotels. The exercise on August 18 was attended by representatives of 100 SHGs. “We got vital information about safe food storage, handling, transport and distribution. This will help us serve children better through our mid-day meal scheme,” informed Savita Kadam, an SHG member. “The trainer taught us how to detect rotten vegetables and grains, if any, so the kids get quality food. Little things like how to maintain sanitation by washing hands, how often they should be washed, etc, were very helpful,” said Ragini Kamble, president, Savitribai Bachat Gat Mahasangh. “We got good response from SHGs in the city. In light of the food poisoning through mid-day meal, this is a major step. We are not only aiming to avert such incidents, but also want to make this a model worth emulating. With this mission we have also initiated campaign for safe food across the state. We are headed towards our aim to train and educate each and very food handler on a mammoth scale, an exercise which may be registered in the Limca Book of Records,” said Shashikant Kekare, joint commissioner, FDA (food) Pune. 300 Number of self-help group members who undertook the training mid-day/news/2013/aug/200813-pune-fda-tries-to-make-mid-day-meal-safer.htm
