FEASTING ON SEAFOOD: Yesterday afternoon we went to one of our favorite seafood restaurants, Capt. Johns, in St. Marys County in southern Maryland. Its been a favorite of ours for years as we look forward to returning for special occasions. What can be more special then an outing with family. I look forward to the drive to Capt. Johns along Virginia and Marylands scenic back roads with fields planted in corn and alfalfa. What impresses me most is the spectacular view from atop the Harry Nice bridge when crossing the vast expanse of the Potomac River. Todays unspoiled view looks much as it did in the 1630s when the first English colonists sailed up the Potomac River before eventually dropping anchor in nearby St Marys River where they established the first permanent English Colony in Maryland. With a little imagination one could almost envision the billowing sails of the The Ark and the Dove as they made their way up the Potomac River to its destiny with history. Our original plan for Saturday was to visit Luray Caverns in the Shenandoah Valley. Due to a late start we decided to go out for dinner at Capt. Johns instead. It didnt take much to convince everyone a seafood dinner was better then a dark cave! As one might expect on a Saturday afternoon, Captain Johns was doing a brisk luncheon business when we arrived. With pleasant weather, we decided to go with a shaded table on the deck overlooking the marina. Just across the water lay Cobb Island with quaint little cottages lining its shore. Capt. Johns is our place of choice when we want good seafood, pleasant water views and a nice ambiance. Weve dined here in both winter and summer months. Needless to say, we enjoyed some pleasant conversation and great food as we wiled away the afternoon hours. The waitress even brought an extra basket of saltines so Catie and James (myself included) could feed the ducks gathered in the water beside our table. In fact, the ducks and seagulls gathered around all the tables on the deck as their accustomed to being fed by diners with the server even encouraging it by bringing additional treys of saltines! I ordered the crab cake platter with potato salad, cole slaw, creamy crab soup and shared a pitcher of Sam Adams summer ale with Sharon and Scott. No one was disappointed with what they ordered as all the food was excellent. We all agreed capt Johns was a great choice for lunch. In the evening we treated ourselves to ice cream at Carls followed by coffee at Blackstone Coffeehouse at Eagle Village on the campus of the University of Mary Washington to conclude a wonderful day. It doesnt get any better then this. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Colonial St. Marys City was first envisioned by a British Lord, George Calvert, who was Catholic in a time of religious persecution of Catholics in England. Out of his personal struggles and also out of a desire to profit from owning a colony in the New World, he envisioned a new colony where people of all faiths could live in freedom, tolerance, and safety. What followed was the establishment of St. Marys City, the first Maryland colony. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
