FERGUSON, MISSOURI I am the first one to recognize that when I learned about the looting, I lost my objectivity for a while. However, to be objective, the entire scenario must be accounted for. If we lose our objectivity, we lose the ability to think logically. Reports of arrests indicate that many looters were career-criminal opportunists from outside the area — NOT protestors. Although the looters disgraced the communitys eminently VALID protest movement, the yet-to-be-named cop who murdered Mike Brown has disgraced all of law enforcement and the police response to the Ferguson protests has revealed the true intents of a militarized police force – suppression of dissent. If we allow a militarized police force to take hold in our communities and to consistently violate the constitutional rights of citizens, we enable that transition ourselves and this sets a dangerous precedent for the future of a democratic society. Police are meant to protect and serve the people, not the state. It’s up to all of us to hold them to that.
