FIGHT CIGARETTE CRAVINGS WITH FISH OIL Anyone trying to quit smoking should consider taking fish oil. A new study found that omega-3 supplements like fish oil reduces the craving for nicotine. Smokers who were given omega-3 capsules every day for a month cut their cigarette consumption by 11 percent (two fewer cigarettes a day) compared to those given placebos. According to this article from the Daily Mail, cigarette smoking reduces the levels of essential fatty acids in the brain, especially omega-3s. A deficiency in omega-3 damages nerve cells and interrupts communication between nerves in areas of the brain involved with feeling pleasure and satisfaction. These areas of the brain are important in addiction. When you don’t feel satisfied, you reach for another cigarette. Other studies also have found that an omega-3 imbalance could affect mental health and the ability to cope with pressure and stress. Pressure and stress are often associated with the urge to smoke. So increasing the level of omega-3s could make it easier to deal with stress without a cigarette. Omega-3 supplements are relatively inexpensive, easily available and have very few side effects. For those struggling to quit smoking, they may be worth a try.
