Illegal use and sell of ICT Equipment: ZICTA press release on illegal use of baby monitors and cordless phones Introduction The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) registers dealers in electronic communications equipment in Zambia in accordance with the ICT act No. 15 of 2009. The bulletin has been designed as a knowledge kit for dealers and the general public to keep abreast with this regulation. It highlights newly registered dealers in the previous month and also gives a link to a comprehensive list of dealers with valid authorization certificates. Further, being one of dealers’ obligations, it gives tips on the type approval process. Illegal use and sale of ICT equipment Dealers and the general public trading/using cordless phones and baby monitors and indeed any electronic communications devices not approved by ZICTA should immediately switch them off and surrender such equipment to ZICTA, failure to which the equipment will be confiscated and persons involved prosecuted in accordance with the Law. The following equipment models in particular are NOT TYPE APPROVED and are illegally on the market. MODELS NOT TYPE APPROVED (i) Motorola, MBP 8 Audio Baby Monitor (ii) Phillips, AVENT DECT Baby Monitor, SCD530 (iii) Motorola, MBP 28 Baby Monitor (iv) VTECH, CS6619, DECT 6.0 Handset (v) Panasonic, DECT, KX-TG4131 (vi) Panasonic, DECT 6.0 Plus, KX-TG4133M (vii) Panasonic DECT 6.0, KX-TG9331T (viii) Panasonic DECT 6.0, KX-TG64215A (ix) Panasonic DECT 6.0, KX-TG1061 (x) Panasonic DECT 6.0, KX-TG7621 The public is also cautioned to only buy ICT equipment that is TYPE APPROVED BY ZICTA and bares the ZICTA certification Mark. Likewise, the general public should only procure electronic communication equipment from dealers that are certified by the Authority in line with SI 65 of 2011 under the ICT Act. Prohibited Equipment Some electronic communications equipment is prohibited under the ICT Act and it is an offence to operate or be found with such equipment. Below is the list of prohibited equipment: 1. Scanning Receivers 2. Military Communication Equipment 3. Telephone Voice Changing Equipment 4. Automatic Call Diverters 5. Radio-communication Equipment operating in GSM frequency bands except Cellular Mobile Phones or such other equipment approved by the Authority 6. Radio-communication Jamming Devices operating in any frequency band. Zambia International Trade Fair ZICTA will this year be showcasing 50 years of Business Transformation and Development at the Zambia International Trade Fair. The stand will also be open to dealers who may wish to come and obtain information on any aspect of dealership. We will also be accepting and fast-tracking applications for Dealers Certificates and Renewals at the stand. You are therefore encouraged to visit our stand.
