FINLAND HAS 47000 JOBS OPENINGS WHICH REMAINED UNFILLED AT PRESENT WITH AUTOMOBILE COMPANY LOOKING TO FILL 300 JOBS BUT UNABLE TO FIND WORKERS The Uusikaupunki automotive plant has a problem: where to find new employees? “Were hiring on all fronts,” confirms Juha Laitala, an HR specialist at Valmet Automotive. Last Wednesday, the automotive maker announced that it will recruit 300 new employees at its plant in Uusikaupunki due to a growing demand for Mercedes-Benz A-Class vehicles. “That was like a Christmas present,” comments Jaana Hernelahti, the director of employment and enterprise services at the Employment and Economic Development Office (TE Office) of South-west Finland. Indeed, despite the disappointing unemployment figures there are still scores of unfilled jobs in Finland. On Monday, over 13,000 job openings were listed on the website of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. The actual number of openings, however, is substantially higher because not all openings reported to TE Offices are advertised online. In fact, the most recent statistics compiled by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy indicate that in late January TE Offices were aware of over 47,000 job openings. Furthermore, the ministry estimates that only 60—70 per cent of all job openings are reported to TE Offices in the first place. Hence, there may have been as many as 70,000—80,000 unfilled jobs in Finland roughly a month ago. The situation is thus not completely hopeless for Finlands 327,600 registered job-seekers. In the retail and manufacturing sectors, the number of job openings has even increased from the previous year. In Uusikaupunki, Valmet Automotive is hiring in order to move from a one-shift production schedule to two shifts and thereby to ensure that the plant can crank out 100,000 vehicles by 2016. No vocational qualifications are required for the job as new employees will be trained on-site. Applicants must, however, have the right attitude. Having received some 250 job applications in few days, Laitala estimates that a total of 1,000 job-seekers will apply for the openings.
