FOOD FOR THOUGHT Today morning I came through the news about the appointment of Dr. Vivek Murthy as the Surgeon General of United States of America. (a statutory post in department public health) I couldnt understand why Indian media, public and even the external affairs ministry went on in a celebratory mood. And they quote an Indian-American was appointed as the new surgeon general of USA. Is it any kind of diplomatic victory? An American by birth and person of Indian decent was appointed the surgeon general for his skills and leaning towards democratic party. Did government of India lobbied his appointment. Or is he going to give his expertise to us ? And this doesnt stop with this. When any scientific breakthrough comes and an Indian origin scientist is there in the research we go on celebrate. We take pride for it. Do we really deserve the pride when the scientist was a citizen of the west. (of course scientists doesnt have boundaries and thier research can be celebrated world wide but I am against this selective celebration) It even extends to celebrate the Indian origin spell bee winners despite holding a around 300 million children of the same age group and doing nothing to recognise our own desi talents. And now I might sound like a mad man. But do we at least give a spare of thought to our scientists or atheltes? Does anyone knew Hemadranath chatterjee, the man who discovered ORS (oral rehydration therapy) to treat diarrhoea and saving more than 2 million lives a year since 1980. Take for example Sania Mirza. She is an Indian by birth. She plays and represent India. She loves her nation. Be it grand slams or Olympics she plays for us.Yet we criminalised a sports icon for marrying a man of her choice. My point being if see start recognising and nurture such Indian talents we need not go for out sourcing to get inspiration and achievements. To be honest in my personal opinion we dont have legitimate right to celebrate Indian origin IVY league scientist when we dont recognise our own people.
