FORGET WHAT IS BEHIND AND PRESS FORWARD Philippians 3:13-21King James Version (KJV) 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. In order to know where we’re going, we need to know where we’re coming from. I so agree with this statement and I know the value of looking behind. In looking behind us, we can assess our past with the aim of not making the same or similar mistakes in the future. We can also assess our achievements and see how to build on them for the future. So it’s good to look behind us. However, in all the - - glorious years I celebrated this year, I’ve never known an athlete to win gold by keeping his eyes focussed behind throughout the race. He had to focus on the goal (gold) ahead of him. Even if he glanced a bit behind to assess the distance of his competitors. The problem many of us have is getting stuck in our past. Like Lot’s wife we look back and become frozen into a pillar of salt. Stuck. We can’t move on, we can’t get over the mistakes, we can’t forget what she did or what he said, we can forgive neither ourselves nor others. We even find it hard to move on from our successes. We glow and we glow over what we have achieved forgetting that there are more mountains to conquer ahead of us. Year after year comes and goes and finds us in the same spot. Stuck in our past. We’re fast approaching the end of another year and my God! I really can’t believe we’ve already completed 2014! So many ups, so many downs, and some things left us wondering whether we were up or down. But as we come to the close of another day, another year, another season, let us forget those things which are behind and press forward to that which is ahead. And ultimately as Paul said, press toward the mark for the prize of the higher calling of God in Christ Jesus. So come on! Let’s dream, let’s desire, let’s plan, let’s make a change. We certainly can by the grace of Almighty God.
