FRIDAY POLITICAL RANT: There are few things I dislike more than a Republican. I’d rather deal with that guy who talks to you on the airplane, or that person eating something fishy on the metro bus – standing room only, on a 90 degree day, or even… CHILDREN. The only people that bother me more are: People who don’t vote. Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader and Grandfather of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, said this week that if he takes control of the senate in November he intends to pass spending bills that greatly restrict the activities of the federal government – he said: “That’s something he [President Obama] won’t like, but that will be done. I guarantee it.” Now aside from sounding like that guy from the Men’s Warehouse commercials this is a startling look into what this twisted tortoise-man has in store for the country. When you only pass spending bills that greatly restrict the governments functions the president will have no choice but to exercise his veto – leading to the shutdown of one department at a time and eventually a shutdown of the entire federal government again. “I guarantee it”. Despite their genuinely misguided and simpleton ways I’m going to predict the Grand Old Party takes the senate in November because: people don’t vote in midterm elections. About forty percent of the American populace actually turns out for a midterm election compared to closer to sixty percent in presidential elections. How disturbing is it that six out of ten people on the street couldn’t care less – literally cannot be bothered to have a voice? This is the reason idiots can take control and gradually destroy the great society. I have a proposal that Republicans will absolutely hate – because they know they’d never win a majority again. (Mitch McConnell would absolutely soil his shell) 1. Simplify the voting technology. Such as Mail-in ballots like Washington State, online voting, or voting from phone applications. 2. Election days are a national holiday. If no one has to work then everyone has time to vote. 3. Compulsory voting. 22 countries practice compulsory voting and it is very effective. If you don’t vote, you’ll be subject to a fine or other punishment. Even if we have to force people to vote – that’s better than having more than half the population unrepresented. I don’t want to touch much on the Ferguson story because I know I would be one to put my foot in my mouth somehow and I really really rely on being able to use ‘I have black friends’ you know, just like Mitch McConnell does. There are a plethora of socioeconomic reasons why the black population in Ferguson is absolutely not represented by their elected officials. We have to be honest though – when people are not engaged the control goes to the people who are willing to take the power from them, and those people are not usually the ones who have the best interest of minorities and the poor on their to-do list. Anyone who is protesting their government there who didn’t vote – is a hypocrite. You can’t choose not to have a voice and then be pissed when you don’t get one. And anyone who thinks November doesn’t matter and doesn’t cast a ballot, doesn’t get to wine when that snapping turtle cuts their vocal cords – they kind of have it coming.
