FROM THE NEWSROOM: A 24-year-old Jewett City man who authorities say confessed to stealing more than sixty storm drain grates from area towns, including Plainfield, back in February appeared in Danielson Superior Court Friday, where he was released on a raised $100,000 bond to a treatment center. It was revealed in court that Jeremy Gileau, who has substance abuse issues, also has a pending court date in Rhode Island for selling stolen property, and pending cases in Connecticut for larceny in the 6th degree, reckless endangerment and falsifying statements. He faces a charge of larceny in the 5th degree; his next court date was set for August 25th. As reported, earlier this year state police arrested Gileau following an investigation into the thefts of storm drain grates from residential streets in Griswold, Lisbon and Plainfield, according to State Police Spokesman Lt. Paul Vance. In an interview with troopers, Gileau allegedly confessed to taking the grates and admitted to taking storm drain covers in the three towns. Vance says information related to the Plainfield thefts was given to the Plainfield Police Department, adding that the theft and replacement of the storm drain grates cost the three towns thousands of dollars and put the general public in the area in danger, with storm drain openings left uncovered.
