FROM THE NEWSROOM: Just days after the formal dedication of the Lt. Dennis R. Lemery Memorial Training Center, President of the Dayville Fire District Kevin Ide requested several changes to the facilitys plans at Mondays Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, which he says will both save money and make the firefighter training site environmentally friendly in the long run. In order reduce the length of Connecticut Water lines that would need to be run to the main classroom building, the revision called for moving that building to the south side of the property. Another proposed change was to convert the crushed stone at the car fire area into concrete, but Ide says with pockets tight at the moment, he simply wanted to alert the commission of that possibility. Not every change was accepted, however. Because of some conflicting reports at an earlier meeting about the exact height of the building and what was required by zoning regulations, officials say the facilitys height – approximately 38 feet tall – is about three feet over the limit. When asked if a variance could be given, Director of Planning and Development Linda Walden said that more research must be done, due to the projects special permit. An alternative option was posed at the meeting, which was to dig a hole and place the building several feet below the ground. Ide says, with how quickly he wants the project to begin, he is going to do just that. As reported, the training facility is hoped to be completed by the spring of next year. Tune in for the full report.
