FROM THE NEWSROOM: State and regional officials are warning taxpayers to beware identity theft scams that have been increasing drastically over the past couple of years. Nancy Cahalen, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Central New England and Massachusetts, says citizens should take steps to make sure their identities arent stolen for the purpose of claiming tax returns; she says her biggest word of advice is to shred old paperwork with social security numbers or other personal information. The Bureau also advises to file tax returns early in the season, use a secure internet connection when filing electronically, respond to mail from the IRS as soon as possible, and checking credit card reports at least once a year to make sure no other accounts have been opened in your name. Cahalen says if you suspect you are a victim of tax return identity theft, you should call the IRS immediately at 1-800-908-4490. Tune in for the full report.
