Face Off (1997), directed by John Woo, featuring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage youtube/watch?v=Vlg-VRc6TbY Ok, time for something controversial, as this movie might not be the most obvious choice when it comes to great movies, but in my opinion it has its merits due to some unique features: It is the best fusions of Hong Kong action cinema with Hollywood budget. It is one of the last movies where Jon Woo had full artistic freedom. It is one of the best works of Nicolas Cage before his descent into laughing stock he is today. Its is one the last action movies using real stunts, before CGI/digital effects took over. While it has a simplistic (others would say reduced or streamlined) plot and the action scenes are of course over the top, it doesnt feel stupid, as it doesnt try to dumb the story down to the lowest denominator. This is 90s action Cinema at its best.
