Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head. This position will work in the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) Program. PISCO is a long-term monitoring and research program designed to understand the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem established with the goals of: Understanding dynamics of the coastal ocean ecosystem along the U.S. west coast; sharing that knowledge so ocean managers and policy makers can take science‐based decisions regarding coastal and marine stewardship; and producing a new generation of scientists trained in interdisciplinary collaborative approaches. The Faculty Research Assistant will work with professors, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students in research on ecosystem dynamics in rocky intertidal communities and the near shore ocean along the West Coast. The primary field research responsibility for this position includes working with colleagues to design, set up, maintain, and terminate experiments at 12+ field sites. Lab duties include: field data entry, maintenance of data spreadsheets, keep atop of literature pertaining to field experiments, disseminate scientific literature to seasonal research assistants, perform analyses for scientific publication, draft manuscripts for publication, and present latest findings at scientific meetings. This position will also perform coordination of field logistics, training, and supervision of seasonal research assistants on field research, data collection, and PISCO scientific protocols. PISCO is a large-scale marine research program that focuses on understanding the near-shore and intertidal ecosystems of the U.S. West Coast. An interdisciplinary collaboration of scientists from four universities, PISCO integrates long-term monitoring of ecological and oceanographic processes at dozens of coastal sites with experimental work in the lab and field. We explore how individual organisms, populations, and ecological communities vary over space and time. PISCOs findings are applied to issues of ocean conservation and management, and are shared through public outreach and student training programs. Position Duties 50% - Field Work: Designs, establishes, maintains, monitors, and terminates field experiments. Must often make quick onsite decisions on the conduct of field experiments. Identifies marine taxa for scientific experiments/observations. Deploys, retrieves, and downloads data loggers and scientific collectors. Trains Seasonal Research Assistants on PISCO field protocols. Interacts with public as needed. Draws conclusions of findings and conveys them to Principle Investigators. Works with other PISCO researchers and graduate students when needed. 40% - Lab Work: Prepares for fieldwork. Enters and maintains data for scientific analysis. Analyzes data for publication and presentation. Processes samples. Fabricates scientific field equipment. Keeps abreast of current scientific literature pertaining to fieldwork. Prepares findings for publication or presentation. Draws own conclusion on research and conveys findings to Principle Investigators. Trains seasonal research assistants on all PISCO lab protocols. Obtains necessary state and federal permits. Maintains field and lab equipment. Prepares project budgets. Orders equipment and supplies. Attends scientific meetings and symposia to present data. Keeps abreast of latest scientific literature and disseminates to the lab. 10% - Supervises Seasonal Research Assistants (SRA) and Student Workers: Plans, approves and assigns seasonal research assistants work. Trains seasonal research assistants in PISCOs laboratory and field research protocols, as well as appropriate rules and regulations of OSU.
