Fair warning. Just got a call from U.S. Cellular 207-598-4867. Caller had heavy accent and obviously in a very noisy call center, which raised my suspicion immediately. Said he was from some company hired by Microsoft to investigate internet errors coming from my computer. I played along for a while, but if you are not familiar with computers, please hang up on him/her ASAP. He wanted me to run the eventvwr program from the Run command. I stalled him while I did a Google search on eventvwr, and got hits on this being a scam. Eventvwr is a legit Microsoft program that is used for diagnosing problems - it is safe to run. However, the scammers are using it to have you see the routine errors and warnings that are logged, then convince you that something is drastically wrong with your computer. Hang up on them. Dont go further, and especially dont follow their instructions to let them log into your computer remotely, as they most likely will install malware without your knowing it.
