Falling coconuts kill more people than shark attacks (Burges, G., - TopicsExpress

Falling coconuts kill more people than shark attacks (Burges, G., University of Florida). However, we are scared of the shark not of the coconut. In car traffic more accidents are caused by inattention, distraction and fatigue than by drink driving or speeding. However, neither driver-training nor driver-testing places emphasis on these “silent killers” adequately. Already Maycock (1995) found that inattention has to be seen as the major cause of accidents (24%). For the year 2013 official statistics in Austria show that 37% of injuries are caused by inattention and distraction. The number of distracting gadgets will further increase. If we don’t want to read the headline, more drivers killed by google-glasses than people killed by falling coconuts, we have to take action immediately. Being attentive and fit to drive is not a skill which can be trained or tested. It is a question of motivation. Taken from Tri coaching.
