Farm Manager Tip of the Week: Making the World a Better Place One Person at a Time Make Compost Mother Nature never throws anything away! We can see how layer after layer, only with time, a rich soil grows under our feet as we walk trails in the mountain or in the parks around town. Why not copy Mother Nature in its wise way to make rich soil to nurture our flowers and vegetables in the garden? To make compost in small scale: Build a compost bin: square or round, similar height, width and depth (around 3 feet) Add brown and green: make layers of brown (dried leaves, twigs, etc.) and green (organic grass clippings, fruit, veggies trimings) Stir, cover and let cook: after a week or two, mix together the layers, then cover to retain moisture and heat, it will start to cook and the decomposition process will take place. Let time and nature do their work, you will have your compost ready in about 2 months.
