The Old English Period/ The Anglo-Saxon Period (450-1066) : * Heroic deeds are described. * Love for sea advanture. * Love of glory and savagery. Most writer of this period are unrecognized except Cademon, who is recognized as the first known English poet. 2. The Middle English Period (1066-1500) : This Era is divied in to two parts - (a) Anglo- Norman Period (1066- 1340) (b) The Age of Chaucer ( 1340- 1400) Early part of this Age is known as Dark Age, because what actually happened during this part can hardly be known. Features of this Age are - * Poetry served as the main genre. * Drama began in the form of Mystery Play Morality Play and KInterlude. * Love, chivalry and religion are the three main literary ideals of this Age. * The spirit of romance pervades. 3. The Renaissance Period (1500-1660) : This Age has different parts- (a) Elizabethan Age (1558- 1603) (b) Jacobean Age (1603-1625) (c) Caroline Age (1625-1649) (d) Commonwealth Period (1649- 1660) Featrues of Elizabethan Age : * A strong national spirit. * Humanism * Religious broad-mindedness * Religious tolerance and secularism. * The Renaissance brought the Ancient Greek and Roman wisdom in England. * Drama served as the main genre of literature. Features of Jacobean Age: * Drama remained the main model of expression. * Elizabethan idealism of romance and love almost died out. * Poetry took a new and starling turn. 4. The Restoration Period (1660- 1700) : * Realistic drama was predominent. * Writers widely used heroic couplet. * Mechanical perfection was the chief concern of the poets. * The main spirit of the Age was satiric. 5. The Augustan Age/ The Age of Pope (1702- 1745) : * This is an Age of prose * Prevalance of satire * Realism in subject-matter * Refinement of expression. 6. The Age of Sensibility (1745-1785) : * A gradual change came taste and technique in opetry. * With the death of Pope heroic couplet decline * Prose remaned as prominent as before. * A new genre in literature called novel took a definite form. 7. The Romantic Period (1798- 1832) : * Subjectivity * Love for Nature * High imagination * Medievalism * Supernaturalism * Revolutionary zeal * Spontinity 8. The Victorian Period (1832- 1901) : * Doubt and dualism between reasion and emotion; materialism and mysticism; science and religion. * Compromise * Influence of romantic intectualism * Morality was at the centre of all the literary thoughts.
