Fasting Versus Asceticism - - - Fasting is prescribed in the Old and New Testaments. Saints in all ages practiced fasting and prayer. Nevertheless, fasting does not buy blessings. God hates heartless rituals. Fasting crucifies the flesh. Without prayer, fasting will only make you miserable and mean. Asceticism [self-denial] alone does not move God. Fasting needs to be accompanied by the prayer of faith and godly living. - - - Isaiah 58:3 - “Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.”
