Fasting has been a common practice in India - whether or not it is linked to religious reasons - that has multiple health benefits. It is known for over 80 years that mice that are fed low-calorie, nutrient rich diet live much longer. Also, it appears that low calorie diet and fasting are linked to lower levels of growth hormone (called IGF-1), high levels of which are associated with accelerated aging and age-related diseases. From experiments, a genetically engineered mouse that produces low levels of growth hormone can be expected to live 40% longer.
