Fatal traffic crash, Ellis Beach January 6, 2015 at 3:58 am Police are investigating after a gas tanker crashed at Ellis Beach (north of Cairns) last night, claiming one life and leaving another person with serious injuries. An emergent situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act was declared at 8pm due to gas leaking from the tanker. Initial investigations indicate the tanker crashed and rolled on the Captain Cook Highway around 7.20pm, trapping the two occupants. The driver, a 56-year-old man from Trinity Beach, was extracted and taken to the Cairns Base Hospital with what are believed to be serious but non-life threatening injuries. Emergency services continued working to free the passenger, believed to be a 39-year-old woman, however she died at the scene. The highway remains closed at this time. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating with police asking for anyone who may have any information about the crash that could assist them to contact Crime Stoppers.
