Father Dougherty, M.M. asks you to pause and remember during this Memorial Day weekend. Please share your prayers, reflections and remembrances here with us. Dear Maryknoll Friend, This is Memorial Day weekend, a time to fly the flag in tribute to those who died in service to our nation. They are our heroes—men and women who gave ultimately for their country and the ideals that we cherish. A tradition that I love is the National Moment of Remembrance when Americans pause in silence at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. Taps is played, and in a ceremony observed from east to west coast, we remember our war dead and the meaning of sacrifice. My prayer for this Memorial Day is that we will find the time to lay a wreath—even if only in our thoughts—for those who died and the families they left behind. Sadly, war continues to take its toll. May they all rest in Christs peace. I know many people will celebrate this long weekend with picnics and barbecues. But pause with me first and remember... how important it is to work for peace always, and to leave our world a better place than we found it. Peace, we know, depends on the practice of justice. So on Memorial Day 2014, may each of us be the example of Christ among us, and may we practice justice so that one day all may live in peace. Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Edward Dougherty, M.M. maryknollsociety.org
