Feds Look to Big Data on Security Questions InformationWeek (03/03/14) Malykhina, Elena Federal agencies increasingly see continuous monitoring and advanced analytics as the future of IT security, according to a new MeriTalk report based on interviews with federal government IT leaders. Agencies surveyed for the report include the U.S. Government Accountability Office, Department of Homeland Security, Food and Drug Administration, and General Services Administration. These agencies leaders reported a shift toward the use of virtual desktop infrastructures to better centralize data and cloud hubs to offer cloud infrastructure and services. The report says advanced analytics and continuous monitoring will help agencies better understand their networks and strengthen their security posture. The report makes several recommendations to government agencies, including developing a comprehensive IT strategy incorporating big data and cyber security; using data analytics to classify the risk levels associated with different data; investing in tools that integrate analytics and continuous monitoring technology; and testing dashboard tools that make tracking and interpreting big data easier. The report predicts that big data technology will only improve and become cheaper as time goes on, eventually yielding tools that will be able to monitor and secure networks as well or better than trained computer scientists.
