Feeling Insecure today? You can be Assured! Assurance from 1 John – “Do you obey Him” “And by this we know that we have come to know Him – IF we keep His commandments”. John says a profession to believe is necessarily evidenced by consistent obedience (Direction not Perfection). John says obedience means two things – believing in the name of God’s Son Jesus Christ and loving your brother (1 John 3:23). Furthermore John says these are Spirit driven which is why they are expected to show up in a real believer and cannot be achieved until we are born again (made new in Christ by our first real confession of our sin–see question 1 from yesterday’s post). To those with only a profession (lots of saying but not doing) John says your claim to know God is likely counterfeit. Why? Because the source of goodness (The Spirit) is not in you yet – even your attempts to do good deeds are sinful because they are fueled by you and only glorify you-this is why you feel insecure. John says you can turn to the light today and confess your sin of self-driven goodness, and accept the goodness of Jesus on your account, be filled with His Spirit, and begin to obey His commands for the first time. To those evidencing a profession with action (real faith), John says praise God because your impulses to believe in Jesus and love your brother are really fruits of the Spirit working from within (love, joy, peace, patience etc.) so yield to them and feel like who you are – one who truly knows God. This is Assurance!
