Feeling a sense of poignancy as the 2014 World Cup draws to a close, as Argentina faces off Germany to determine who are the kings of this 20th edition of the World Cup. Having been around long enough to follow and remember the World Cups since 1990, this quadrennial event had been there for a large part of my life so far. If I were to write a book on my life, probably I will use the World Cup to punctuate it into chapters. Italy 1990 : Started my lifelong addiction to the WC as a Primary 5 student, rooting for Matthaus Germany to take revenge over Maradonas Argentina. USA 1994 : Juggling life as a full-time football player and part-time Secondary 3 student, as Brazil won on penalty kicks against Italy and The Divine Ponytail. France 1998 : Serving my nation as a botak army boy, watching secretly in bunk as botak Zidane n co thrashed an off-colour Brazil and botak Ronaldo. Japan/Korea 2002 : Having my 2nd years end-of-year break in university, enjoying the Mothra-Godzilla face-off between Brazils Ronaldo and Germanys Kahn. Germany 2006 : Earning my keep while in the land of the previous World Cup (Japan), sighing as Italy triumphed France and a head butting botak. South Africa 2010 : Surprisingly enjoying life in between jobs, as Spain took out Netherlands to become only the 8th ever World Cup champions. Brazil 2014 : Back to being gainfully employed, as the Messi inspired Argentina over the free-scoring Germany. What will the next chapter be when the World Cup travels to Russia in 2018?
