Fifteen people are reported to have been killed in scattered clashes in Cairo as thousands of supporters of the ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi were prevented by security forces from entering Tahrir Square. Troops and police used teargas and fired live ammunition in the air to drive the protesters away from the square where the fortieth anniversary of the 1973 war with Israel is being marked. Pro-Morsi supporters said they would use the anniversary to come out en masse to denounce what they see as a military coup. Protests and clashes are taking place elsewhere in Egypt.
