DUTIES: Back to top The File Clerk utilizes a variety of software applications, SSA systems, and databases to control the flow of material through the component; independently identifies, evaluates, and processes work assignments by accessing a variety of software and computer systems; examines correspondence and other claim material to identify items requiring immediate action; maintains a holding file of critical case folders for computer output. Specialized experience is work that is related to operating the computer to input and retrieve data; following regulatory guidance and administrative procedures to file and perform record keeping functions on records and/or files; responding to customer requests for information using a variety of communication methods such as telephone, fax, email or mail. Note: Part-time work is prorated in crediting experience (e.g., if you work 20 hours per week for a 12-month period you will be credited with 6 months of experience). SUBSTITUTING EDUCATION: If you are qualifying for this position based on completed education at an accredited U.S. college, university, or other educational institution, you must provide a copy of your transcripts or other proof of education. NOTE: Education completed in a foreign institution must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs. For GS-5: Successful completion of a bachelors degree or a full 4-year course of study in any field leading to a bachelors degree (e.g., 120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours). COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Experience and education as may be combined to meet the minimum qualification requirements. Education course work equivalent to a baccalaureate program beyond the second year (e.g., in excess of the first 60 semester or 90 quarter hours) is creditable toward meeting the minimum qualification requirements. Note: Experience and education will be computed as percentages of the overall requirements and must equal 100 percent when combined.
