Finally some good news for state employees & retirees. After enrollment process failures and resulting higher employee and retiree costs last year, state treasurer’s office announced that a planned 2.14 percent hike in State Health Plan premiums next year will not be necessary. Final decision will be up to lawmakers, but no premium hikes also means $23 million in savings for North Carolina – money that should be returned to employees and retirees by actually lowering those premiums and ending punitive wellness surcharges. $23M would only cover a small fraction of employee raises, and if Treasurer Janet Cowell were really serious, she would renegotiate bad and secret investment contracts and use those savings to pay for retiree COLA. ow.ly/x38DA
