Fingerpainting in Psych Class chapter walkthrough. "The Real World as a Mine Field," Part 2 In the course of this frustrating work, I developed a therapeutic metaphor that seems to help. I start by giving the teen a hypothetical situation. I begin, “Jenny, let’s say we are in the end zone on a standard size football field. And let’s say all your life’s dreams and desires are in the opposite end zone, a short 100 yards away. There you would find things like your dream job, money, success, a husband, a family, whatever you really want from life. “And let’s say you are ready to make your way across the field. But before you go, I give you some very important information. The football field you are about to cross is also a mine field. Live mines are buried every so often all the way across the field. “Now Jenny, you have every right to just go. It’s your life and it’s your journey. But what if I told you I know where 30 percent of the mines are between here and the other end zone? And that your mom and dad together have personal knowledge of where another 50 percent of the mines are located? Tell me, Jenny, would you want to get with us so you could find out where those mines were? These would be all the mines that we ourselves set off as we were making our way across the field. Or, they might have been the ones we came very close to, but were fortunate enough not to have set off . Or, they might be the mines some other nice person warned us about. Do you want to find out how to avoid a lot of danger and hurt, and find out where all those mines are? Or do you just want to set out on your own and take your chances?” Conclusion later tonight!
