Finished the rough draft of my prologue. Tell me what you think! Also keep in mind that this looks much prettier in a word document, as I cut and pasted it from there to here. ~Midna Prologue Swaddling her newborn child in the soft, green blanket she finished knitting for him a few days before he was born, the woman runs for her life. Barefoot and only in her night clothes, she hugs him to her chest as she pushes her way out the door, the flames reaching up high behind her now engulfing what used to be her home. With the men away at the war across the sea, she’s terrified of what this means for her and her child. The all-seeing, all-knowing dark one has discovered the existence of the child, or at least has suspicion he is the boy of legends. She knew, as all mothers know, that she had to protect him at all costs. Not just because she was his mother, but because it was his destiny to end what was happening. She knew the moment she birthed him into the world and held him for the first time that he was special. She thought back to the moment when she held him and they touched skin for the first time, when the images flashed through her mind, images of the boy growing stronger day by day, of him defeating monsters unimaginable, of him bringing peace to the land. At only a week and a half old, he hardly seemed like a hero, she found it hard to believe, but deep in her heart of hearts, she knew. As a healer and fortune teller of the village, she had faith in her visions and instincts. As a mother, this information broke her heart. Always receiving two vision, two different realities, she knew that if he didn’t succeed, the world would succumb to the darkness of the evil one and any goodness would be snuffed out and destroyed, plunging the world into chaos and madness which would eventually end up destroying everyone from existence. She couldn’t let that happen. Running away from the screams of the other villagers and the intense heat of the flame, she retreated to the darkness of the forest for safety. Branches cracked under her feet, pine needles poking the delicate skin of her heel. Still, she pushed on, knowing that the fate of the world was literally in her hands. She hugged her son closer to her chest and pushed on, hearing the shouts of guards at the edge of the forest. Someone must have seen her. She cursed under her breath, frightened for her and her baby’s life. She needed a safe place for him, a place where either someone would take care of him, or she could come back for him. She searched frantically, her eyes scanning the forest with what light was provided by the moon and the flames of their burning village. She remembers the stories her mother told her of the Kokoris, the spirits of the forest. Though she has never seen one, she believes they’re always there, watching. They never leave the forest. She feels this is her best chance. “My dear Goddesses, my mothers, please, if you can hear me, grant my baby safe haven.” She prays out loud, her breath labored and rough as she continues running. “I know your plan for him, please, keep him in your favor so he may grow into the man you have determined him to be. Please show me where to place him so he may best do your will and protect what you have so painstakingly created for us here in Hyrule. Please. I beg you goddesses. Protect him.” Suddenly, voices are carried in the wind and she catches them. Raspy and not really human, they whisper at her. Not quite able to understand them, she stops, cocks her head and listens. She stills, closes her eyes and listens as the raspy voices meet her with the breeze. A peaceful calm passes over her and knows what she must do. She kissed her son’s forehead. “I love you, Link. Go be the hero I know you are.” She placed him down on a bed of soft green moss at the base of an old oak tree. Backing up, she turns and runs in the opposite direction, towards the sound of the guards, leaving her young infant in the hands of the Goddesses themselves.
