First ever captured Orca, a male named Moby Doll. He lasted - TopicsExpress

First ever captured Orca, a male named Moby Doll. He lasted about 88 days in captivity before passing away. He was harpooned to be put on exhibit, but managed to remain alive. While harpooned, other members helped him breath by pushing him to the surface, before having to leave him. Meanwhile, he tried frantically to escape. He was shot with a rifle, but he still managed to remain alive. They decided to drag him 65 kilometres through harsh seas to Vancouver. He was deemed a she, for a long time, but when he passed away the necropsy revealed that she was a he, and he was part of J-pod, a clan of the Southern Residents off of British Columbia and Washington. They had not known that local Residents were fish-eaters, so Moby Doll did not eat much for nearly 55 days, relying on what could have been within his small enclosure. This was the first account of capturing killer whales...the first of many captures that would begin to occur for many years, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s.
