‘First glimpse’ of Manipur impresses DU students manipurtimes/news-article/the-peoples-chronicle-news/item/14722- A brief glimpse of the state’s scenic beauty was all that was needed to rejuvenate a 130-strong student delegates from Delhi University who arrived here Sunday evening with chants of ‘Long Live Manipur, Long Live DU’ as a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endeavour to familiarise university students of mainland India with the North East region. In sync with the Prime Minister’s recent announcement that teams of 100 students each from various universities across the country would tour the states of the North East region for better understanding on the contribution towards enriching Indian art and culture as well as exploits in the field of sports by people of the region, 100 DU students accompanied by 30 mentors and guides arrived here this evening from Guwahati. The ‘familiarisation’ tour programme comprising of 900-student delegates and guides in a special train was flagged from at New Delhi on December 18. Upon reaching Guwahati, where they were accorded a warm welcome by the Assam Government, the student tourists fanned out to different states of the region with the Manipur-bound delegation reportedly escorted upto Kohima by Assam police followed by the said team safely handed to escort personnel of 2nd Manipur Rifles by Nagaland police at Mao Gate. The DU students, who arrived here at around 4 pm Sunday in eight vehicles from Guwahati, will be officially welcomed at the Palace Compound auditorium of Manipur Film Development Corporation at 4 pm Monday. Before moving in to their hotels, a student delegate interacting with this daily confessed that the entire team was greatly relieved on seeing valley area after travelling several kilometres of their journey through hilly terrain. Conceding that most parents of the DU students were against the idea of their wards opting for Manipur for the state had been in the news mostly for the wrong reason, he regretted that the parents had false impression about Manipur being a battle-ravaged area. Such a perception was found to be far from truth for the team realised that Manipur’s charm lies in its naturally blessed landscape and friendly weather condition, expressed the student adding that all travel-related inconveniences they endured during the long journey through pitiful condition of the national highway was forgotten on reaching here. Confiding that despite cautioning by the parents he listened to his inner call to explore Manipur and eventually realised that the choice was correct, the student said on first impression about the state there is already a strong indication that many exciting experiences and unforgettable memories would be gained from the tour of Manipur. Pointing out that the team never expected that their journey would end in a plain, he likened Manipur having large valley area to an elixir. The student also humorously remarked that all through their journey, especially travelling in the hilly section of the national highway, his travel-mates mulled on submitting a memorandum to the Government of Manipur to ensure that at-least the highway is maintained properly. In addition to interacting with Manipuri sportspersons, who had excelled at the national and international level of competition, the DU delegates are also scheduled to study and compile report on art and culture as well as flora and fauna of Manipur through field visits. While male delegates would stay at Imphal Classic Hotel near North AOC, the female members are being accommodated at Classic Grande located at Chingmeirong.
