First of all i would like to acknowledge the new direction the Department of Conservation and in particular the efforts of our local area manager have taken in recent time to better communicate with affected parties on issues that affect us. I was called today and advised that the minister will be making an announcement on wednesday the 29th January in regards to the state of the conservation areas. In it there will be a reference to the the battle for the birds. This will be the departments catch phrase for helping all of the endangered avian species in areas that are known to support these birds. You may recall the recent articles on the impending beech mast upon us in the south island that is likely to trigger a population explosion of rats and mice and of course their mates the possums. So the department has approved extensive funding for aerially applied 1080 poison to control these pests over considerable areas of the south island, over the next three year period. The club and the national rules of the nzda clearly show our opposition to this type of indiscriminate distribution of poison. Our club has worked in conjunction with the department on these issues in the past and will do so in the future to obtain the best solution as possible, with the results of the 2006 drop resulting in almost no deer bykill. I will be doing everything in my power to ensure the same result occurs for the areas that are targeted in our region. I will be frank.. their is unlikely to be a stop to this, and we all oppose the poison and its method of distribution. I and our committee and past individuals that have been involved with previous operations will be seeking input into the operations to minimise the environmental and potential bykill of an operation such as this. The full list of areas is not available at this stage and we are expecting to be advised as soon as the department has the information available. I will keep you posted and welcome healthy discussion on this in this forum or at the meeting in a few days. Regards David Rider SLBNZDA President.
