Fitness Tip - 23 (Cancer Rehabilitation) Regular physical activity helps cancer patients recuperate and return to normal lifestyle with greater independence and functional capacity. The most serious health outcomes for most cancer survivors include loss of body mass and decreased energy level and functional status. This is particularly prevalent following surgery and during chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Loss of function status includes difficulty walking more than one block and chronic fatigue that limits completion of routine household chores. Approximately 75% of cancer survivors report extreme fatigue during radiation therapy or chemotherapy, probably from weight loss and muscle atrophy and loss of cardiovascular endurance. Home-based exercise regimens reduce feeling of fatigue and enhance life quality and other biosocial outcomes following cancer diagnosis. Maintaining and restoring function present distinct challenges to the cancer survivor. Keep training. Dr Saranjeet Singh (Sports Medicine Specialist)
