Five years ago at this very moment, I was seeing Dr. Beckham for my annual physical. The physical went fine until the time for blood work. I never realized what my life and my familys life would endure the following months and years. It was five years ago today that I started a journey of uncertainty, but a journey of drawing closer to God and learning what faith, trust, and hope really is. I told Dr. Berdeja on the first day that I received the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia that I did not want to know my prognosis. All he had to say was there was a possible cure for my illness. I shared with him that I desired to be healed and did not want to know my odds of being healed. That day, I did tell him that I would find out in 5 years. Well, today is that day. I will see Dr. Berdeja today for my 3 month visit. I anticipate a great report. While I am with him I will ask, given my relapse after my first year and receiving a second transplant, my odds of survival. Amazingly, at 3:30, the time 5 years ago today I met with Dr. Hemphill, my first oncologist (which I didnt even know what an oncologist did), I will share my story at Centennial Hospital for the kickoff for Light the Night, an annual walk for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Needless to say, today is a HUGE marker in my life. It marks a journey of trusting God, prioritizing my life, and recognizing Gods mercy in every area of life. You know me, a song is usually always on my mind. The lyrics I cannot escape this morning are: My I never lose the wonder, O the wonder of Your mercy; may I sing Your hallelujahs, hallelujah, Amen. God is so faithful. As we face the struggles that sometimes life will bring, may we be reminded that God is FAITHFUL. He will not leave us or forsake us. His mercies are new everyday. I must admit, I am a little anxious to see Dr. Berdeja today. But at the end of an exciting day of celebrating life and realizing the journey of these last five years, I will truly know that it is all because of God, and God alone.
