Focus on the things that never grow old... This is a poem that I wrote in 2006 and have just put to music and images for a proposed speech presentation. I hope that nobody will be insulted by my words. I dont suggest that you dont take care of yourself and Im not against cosmetic surgery if something really bothers you and it helps to make you feel good about yourself - within reason or course. Im really only cautioning against an unhealthy obsession with beauty and a fear of getting old. Friends, we need to focus on the kind of beauty that never fades. You obsess over age - every wrinkle and dimple Spend fortunes on potions Won’t leave the house with a pimple Your life is a diet That you deny you are on When people ask you your secret You’ve learnt how to con “I eat all the time and just never get fat” It’s all in the genes. Fancy that? Then you flutter your false lashes Extend your fake nails Smile with veneers flashing Claim you support ‘Save the Whales’ You’re so proud of the fact that you’re your own creation Whatever God gave you was just the foundation Your new breasts that you reveal in a low-cut Dior blouse You invite friends to feel “Oooh they feel so real!”… ’Jealous cows!’ Hair extensions, highlights collagen for your lips Oh, don’t forget the liposuction to remove fat from your hips Lift and tuck, sculpt and shape Wax all but a strip Green juice you must sip. Botox that smoothes, the fillers that fill, the makeup that hides that you’re over the hill. STOP! I’m not saying sit up there on some dusty shelf Look good by all means. Take care of yourself Just focus on the things that never grow old that don’t fade away and can never be sold On kindness, compassion, integrity and truth You see, these are the things that last beyond youth.
