Folklorist John Avery Lomax was born on September 23, 1867. One of the many great singers Lomax recorded was Frank Goodwyn of Kingsville, Texas, who sang in both English and Spanish. This song, identified in the collectors fieldnotes as La Grand Partida is called Corrido de Kiansis (Ballad of Kansas) by Frank Goodwyn. This is one of the earliest Mexican American corridos and its many versions are about incidents during a cattle drive from Texas to Kansas. Goodwyn also knew an equally famous song on the same subject, The Old Chisholm Trail: loc.gov/item/afcss39.2622b2/?loclr=fbafc For a biography of John Avery Lomax, see: loc.gov/item/ihas.200196225/?loclr=fbafc Image: Frank Goodwyn (detail).
