Following a somewhat heated discussion on this site between two breeders I would like to bring some common sense to the situation, umbilical hernias are generally caused by the mother of the puppies being over zealous when severing the umbilical cord and trying to shorten it too much there are puppies where the opening in the wall of the abdomen does not close correctly and has to be correctly by means of surgery in some cases, in others it closes over given time. Hereditary hernias are generally seen in the groin of the individual animal, and are a problem I am pleased to say are seldom if ever seen in miniature schnauzers. the problem of retained puppy teeth is in all breeds of canines generally given access to the knuckle bone end of a marrow bone this will generally right itself but failing that a vet will need to do it under anaesthetic, neither of these situations are of major concern. On the subject of puppy prices it is up to the potential buyer to research whether they are getting value for money, whether the breeder researches the pedigrees of the dogs they are breeding from and if there are problems in the pedigrees that they are doing the necessary tests to ascertain the risk factor, believe me all dogs have hereditary problems in their backgrounds to a greater or lesser degree regardless of whether they are imported or Australian bred or if they have champion in front of their name it is up to breeders like myself to see that the pups we breed are as free as possible of these pitfalls and only a deep and thorough knowledge of the breed gained over many years can see this is so.
