Following the international bestselling success of A Friend like Henry – the story of the Gardner family and their amazing golden retriever Henry, whose love helped their severely autistic son, Dale communicate with the world – All Because of Henry, takes the story forward to the present day. Henry has died and ‘wee’ Henry has arrived in the family home. Dale is now an increasingly independent young man, eager to make a difference to the world, but thwarted at every turn by a world resistant to his undoubted skills and abilities. Autism changes, but it never goes away; Dale is ready for the world, but is the world ready to accept him? We also catch up with the rest of the family and find out how the challenges that they’ve faced have affected their lives. His sister, Amy, has a diagnosis of high-functioning autism; a fact that has raised a whole different set of problems. And against the backdrop of the adversity and prejudice they’ve suffered, Nuala Gardner’s marriage is crumbling as she struggles to support her family while developing her innovative ‘Autism Therapy Dog programme’. Warm, heartbreaking and ultimately triumphant, All Because of Henry is the story of Henry’s legacy and of a mother’s unflagging desire to find a positive, productive and independent future for her children. ABOUT NUALA GARDNER: Nuala Gardner is the mother of Dale age 24 and Amy 12. Both have a diagnosis of autism, at opposite ends of the Autistic Spectrum. For twenty five years Nuala worked as a registered nurse and five years, as a midwife. Her medical knowledge helped her educate her children and fight the system to ensure both received condition specific intervention. In 2007 Nuala wrote the international best seller, A Friend Like Henry ( Un Amigo Como Henry ) which has been translated into 17 languages and told the story of their Golden Retriever, Henry, and his incredible empathy with her son Dale; a powerful connection that helped Dale progress to a life of independence. The book also describes how horses were the key to help his sister, Amy to an independent life. Using her experience with Henry and Dale, Nuala has researched and developed a unique programme that is beneficial to both autistic children and the welfare of dogs. In 2009 a charity in Zamora Spain called PAAT (Perros de Asistencia yanimales de Therapia) contacted Nuala for guidance as to how to develop their own Autism Therapy Dog initiative. Together they combined their work and named the programme the “Gardner and PAAT Canine Guide to Autism.” This unique educational and transitional care system has been successfully piloted in Scotland and implemented with Autism Therapy Dogs with severely autistic non-verbal children in Spain. The ethos is to increase inclusion for the children and the whole family and to facilitate true independence for the autistic child. ed public relations is a boutique agency specialising in publishing and lifestyle pr with a focus on contemporary fiction, celebrity, health and events.
