Following the news of the death of Tenby Lady, Gai Waterhouses - TopicsExpress

Following the news of the death of Tenby Lady, Gai Waterhouses jumps horse, Racing Victoria has written to the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR). We have been informed that Tenby Lady suffered a fetlock injury during track work on the flat, and was taken to a veterinary hospital, and after the operation, stood up and slipped over fracturing her canon bone. She was subsequently euthanised. While Tenby Lady was not killed directly by jumps racing, we maintain that jumping horses and racing them at high speed simply predisposes horses to musculoskeletal injuries, making them more prone to breaking down (whether they are jumping or galloping on the flat). Four years ago to the day, Yoshi Raaza fractured a pelvis in a flat race at Murray Bridge and was killed off the track the following day. He had a long jumping history which likely contributed to this injury. Art Success suffered the same injury during a jumps race at Oakbank in 2012 and was walked off the track and killed out of sight. And last year, Mikiyama suffered a muscle tear during a jumps race and was subsequently killed. Jumps racing is 20x more dangerous than flat racing, and consequently will result in horses dying. CPR estimates that approximately 50% of jumps horses will disappear each year meaning the attrition rate is much higher than just those horses killed on track. We thank Racing Victoria for seeking to clarify the situation to ensure everybody is well informed, and hence have asked Racing Victoria to provide information of the numbers of horses who have been killed in the days and weeks following injuries in jumps races. In the interest of transparency, we expect them to comply.
