***For Immediate Release*** The Kendall County Sheriff is warning the public about a telephone scam in which thieves posing as members of the Kendall County Sheriffs Office, specifically Lt. Larry Ripley and Chief Deputy Gary Miller, falsely inform people they are subjects of arrest warrants as a means of extorting money from them. During the calls, the crooks claim that the victims are facing arrest over supposed failure to pay outstanding warrants. Among the techniques the perpetrators use to make the pitch convincing are using the name of an actual sheriffs employee; presenting victims personal information, such as a former address or date of birth; and threatening jail time or drivers-license revocation. The pitches culminate with demands for money via a prepaid cash card sent to a bogus address. In some recent cases in other counties, the thieves have employed a technique called caller spoofing, in which they make the incoming call appear to be coming from a legitimate government agency on caller-ID screens. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office does call citizens with outstanding warrants to arrange payment to the proper court. We never request you to make payment via a prepaid cash/money card. If you have suspicions and are being asked to pay a fine that you are unaware of, please contact the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office at 830-249-9721 or the Boerne Police Office at 830-249-8645 to inquire about whether you have an outstanding warrant or fine against you.
